Sask’s Thoughts On Reece Brown

Reece Brown has often been overlooked in previous seasons. He goes under the radar due to more experienced midfielders getting the nod in the first team before he has the opportunity.

Having watched a lot of youth football, not just the Birmingham City lads, but across the country. I have noticed that many central midfielders often get their break in the first team out wide.

Sir Alex Ferguson used this tactic when bringing players such as Darren Fletcher through the transition from youth football to the first team. It enables the player to experience the tempo of the game and to develop their passing range without being closed down as quickly as they’re in the centre of the park.

At first, I was very dismissive of this managerial strategy as I have always thought that a player should focus purely on one position and perfect it. I felt that being out wide would waste the talent of a central player.

This is why Sir Alex was a manager and I wasn’t. The youngster in a wide position can learn from the experience of those in the middle by having an appreciation of the movement in order to pass inside to them. It is a genius way to almost shadow a player.

Due to this, I thought that Rowett may try and play Brown on one of the wings in the opening friendlies of this season. But he has decided to let Brown get comfortable with the midfield role.

I personally thought that he has had a remarkable couple of games recently; his passing is certainly a very good attribute. But I fear that at this moment in time, he is a bit lightweight however, strength does build up in time for younger players so it is not a long term issue in any way shape or form.

This season, I think that he can make an impact on the first team squad so should be kept mainly as a utility player but with the odd start especially in cup competitions.

Lee Clark didn’t nurture the younger players but I think that Rowett has the ability and the mindset to help the youngsters into the first team. With this, I’m confident that Brown will develop at the Blues’ and make a massive impression both this season and in coming seasons.
