Sask’s Thoughts On Mlapa

Mlapa was an unknown entity for Blues’ fans just a couple of days ago and now he is the talk of the town.

Despite his towering frame (well over 6ft) he has the speed of a man much smaller. His power helps to generate a speed that I must admit, I wasn’t expecting.

It doesn’t take a qualified football agent to see that he is a very decent player. However, where would he fit into Rowett’s plans in terms of this coming season?

Mlapa has the same positioning as Donaldson and this is in terms of being the target man. Any tall striker will get balls lumped up to them so that they can hold up play; and this is what will be expected of both the Don and Mlapa.

Due to being a proven striker, Clayton will be selected first. He is an established goal scorer in the Championship and having swept up the awards last season, it would make him hard to drop.

But Mlapa is too good for the bench and it would be a waste for Rowett to purchase him, probably at a small fee, only for him to warm the bench. He can do that in Germany. So what would be in it for both parties? Not a lot…

He also can’t partner Donaldson as they’re too similar and wouldn’t compliment the style of play that is needed in a partnership.

Despite being a great player, I wouldn’t make an offer for Mlapa or if I did, I would have to let Thomas go. Despite this, if an offer is made, it will be interesting to see what happens. He doesn’t fit into a front 3 as I’d prefer CD, Gray and Arthur over Mlapa in this formation as well as maybe even Novak and Thomas.
