Sask’s Thoughts on Maghoma

I always try and be honest in my opinion articles and today is no different. When Maghoma first joined the club from Sheffield Wednesday last year, I was fairly disappointed. With Gray inevitably leaving, it was up to us to sign dynamic, young wingers who could cause chaos to defences. I had hoped that Gray would go on to be a second striker for Birmingham City so wanted a player who could do this role such as Graham for Wolves or even Scott Sinclair type of player.

However, we decided to get Maghoma. I wasn’t the most optimistic about him at first. I felt that he often wasted possession and chose the wrong option when had the ball at his feet. He shot when a better ball would be to cross it to Donaldson more often than not and certain aspects of his game, I didn’t feel was worthy of my club. I must admit to you all, that I was wrong and I believe this turn around with him is all down to the hard work he has put in on the training ground this season.

I value him much more now than I ever did before and I think it was the case against Fulham that we missed something going forward. Jacques is always pressing high and being another option for the man on the ball which is invaluable as it creates space for Toral especially to drift into. His range of passing has also come on leaps and bounds as he is trying to implement simple and effective passes which enable us to keep the ball.

The thing that I admire most about him though, is actually his defensive work. Now, I am not saying he should be played as a left back, I am merely admiring how hard he works to track back with a full back. His stamina is very good so he must have worked on his fitness with the coaching staff but when he is in position, I have noticed that he calmly plays the ball out from the back. Many wingers prefer to either try and dribble it out themselves or just thump it in the vague direction of a team mate. Maghoma is much more composed than that and I believe that to come from his increase in confidence as of late.

I think that the performance against Fulham certainly showed why we need this man to be playing when he is fit. He can provide goals and assists but also maintains the structure that is so vital in order to win you games.
