Sask’s Thoughts On Cotterill

Anybody with the middle names ‘George’ and ‘Best’ are clearly destined for great things and the Birmingham City winger, David Cotterill, has been great for Birmingham City.

An unfortunate lack of hair may force many men to lose confidence, but I admire the fact that David works this affect of nature. He struts down the wing like a catwalk model. (Maybe not as elegantly, but it is close.)

The thing that I love about Cotterill is the fact that he gets himself on the score sheet. Wingers are often seen to assist goals; they are the creators. But Cotterill takes helping the team to a new level with his goals.

They are often lovely finishes too. Not only does he cut on his right foot, he can also have a decent crack with his left and this is the sign of a very tricky winger. It makes the defender fear you, it gives you the factor of unpredictability.

Despite running like a chicken, he also has pace in his locker. Deceivingly quick, he can out sprint a lot of fullbacks. This gives him time on the ball and the ability to press high which is a key implementation of the Gary Rowett era.

This season, I would like to see a link up develop with the midfield. He has always been great at finding the forward and he is very direct in attack. But he often doesn’t connect the midfielders and enable a switch of play. I’d like to see one two’s with Shinnie or Brown develop over the coming games.

The speculation of his departure made me realize how much we do need him. At one point, both Donaldson and Cotterill were linked with a move away from the Blues’ and I think that goals would dry up rapidly without these two!

With the signing of Maghoma, I’d say we are covered on the wings now. Gray, Cotterill, Maghoma are the main wingers but Arthur and Novak could also do a decent job there. I think that midfield is an area that needed improving and it has been.

But how about a few signings in defence and attack Gary?!
