Sask’s Opinion On Hancox

I often declare that stats don’t like, and most of the time, I would have to agree with this sentiment. But upon browsing Hancox’s stats, he has only made 1 appearance for Birmingham City this season. In this appearance, he made 1 foul and 0 blocks or clearances. Not as effective as we would expect.

But I really do rate the young lad, which is why I am writing this. He has been at the club since he was 8 year old and boy, does it show. He has the passion that is needed for a Birmingham City player and the spirit which the fans absolutely adore. I remember on that fabulous day in Bolton, Hancox didn’t stop celebrating for about half an hour on the pitch afterwards. It was a joy to see. It’s almost like he is a fan, playing his heart out for his dream club.

Now, recently, I have been critical of our current first choice left back, Grounds. It’s not that he isn’t a good player, I really do rate him. But I believe that he is looking jaded throughout the season, especially during the busy Christmas period. Shane Lowry was back up but as he has left, we really don’t have many options.

That is, unless you count Hancox. He has played a few youth games that I have had the pleasure of watching and I must say that I have been very impressed. He has gone back to basics in terms of his simple passing. Before I have felt that he tries the ‘Hollywood pass’ too often, trying to write his name into the headlines. But recently, he has played nice little 1-2’s around the wide areas and just kept the ball. This shows great development and understanding of the game.

I do like as well how energetic he is. He loves getting forward as I am sure you’re all aware and he is actually very good at attacking. He has whipped in some peachy crosses over the last few games and it is a credit to how hard he has worked after being sent out on loan. But it is his willingness to get back quickly that I love. He doesn’t just jog back, he sprints. He makes sure he is in position before taking a breather and this is the kind of commitment that it is needed. It also shows athleticism which despite Ground’s great attributes, he doesn’t possess this energy.

I think he is just steadily improving fitness with the U21’s and this is a key step in order to get back to Championship pace. But I hope to see him grace the first team soon. Certainly this season as I believe he is capable of making this step permanently and it gives us a more attacking option over Grounds.
