In Michael Morrison and Ryan Shotton, Birmingham City have one of the strongest centre half pairings in the league in terms of threats in either box, but could Blues’ new defender be about to outshine the captain?

Following yet another solid performance from Shotton on Tuesday night in the 1-1 draw at the DW Stadium against Wigan Athletic, it is clear to see that Blues have got themselves an absolute bargain at £300,000.

Yes, you can never take away what Morrison has done for the club since coming in shortly after Gary Rowett’s arrival but it is fair to say that if Shotton continues on this form path, he could easily overtake the former Charlton Althetic defender as the best centre half at the club.

Albeit, the pair have different strengths and different weaknesses, but together, they offer a real solidity at the back and should they both stay fit for the entirety of the 2016/17 season, Blues could find themselves with even more clean sheets than they managed last season.

Granted, Blues should have seen out the win against the Latics on Tuesday but it isn’t the end of the world. A point is still a valuable thing to pick up in the Championship and for all we know, it could turn out to be a point that gets us into the play-offs come may!

It is fair to say that when Shotton first came to the club, many criticised him for some of his bang average performances, myself included, I won’t shy away from that fact, but since he shifted to centre back alongside Morrison, he has got better and better by the game.

When we played our first competitive game of the season against Cardiff City, I said to some fans sat by me in St.Andrews, if Morrison doesn’t step up to the plate this season, Shotton could easily overtake him as the number one centre back that Rowett has at his disposal and I still stand by that.

The 27-year-old was at the heart of everything on Tuesday night defensively and I expect that to continue as the season goes on.

Blues fans, do you agree that Ryan Shotton could become Blues’ most dominant centre back at Gary Rowett’s disposal? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!
