Rowett’s Shot in the Back

After signing Ryan Shotton, it seems Michael Morrison’s parter in the heart of Blues’ defence has been decided upon. But it seems this decision has been made by everyone other than the man who has the final call – Gary Rowett.

Parting with £300k for Shotton’s services may not seem like a purse stretcher, but with Blues’ recent financial cloud still hovering somewhere above them, the transfer was a leap of faith by Rowett.

However, a place in the team, particularly in central defence, seems likely for the former Derby County man if he can impress during pre-season and see off competition from Jonathan Spector and veteran Paul Robinson.

A number of attributes attracted Rowett to Shotton. His versatility, professionalism and decent performance whilst on loan at Blues were factors alnogside the convenience of his relationship status at Pride Park.

Shotton not only offers Blues a partner to their captain but also a back-up option for either full back position if need be. Paul Caddis and Jonathan Grounds coasted through most of last season without consistent competition, something the Blues manager is keen to address.

It’s understood that Rowett is still testing the waters with regards to the possibility of bringing in another central defender but this remains way down his list of priorities.
