A mixed bag of comments from Gary Rowett after his team went down 3-2 to Leicester City. Tough opposition for Blues, but after a good start, I get the feeling Rowett was of the opinion Blues made it difficult for themselves.

The Blues boss was very happy with his sides first half display. The counter-attacking threat his team posed was of particular delight.

Rowett added ‘The goals were two terrific strikes from both wide men. I think it was the first time in pre-season, due to the quality of the opposition, that we had an opportunity to get our shape and be patient and that helped us.’

However is wasn’t all praise as Birmingham collapsed from a 2 goal lead to a 3-2 defeat by the Foxes. Rowett considered the goals very poor and clearly wasn’t thrilled by the way his side ended the game.

‘Two set-pieces where we`ve just not reacted quickly enough and that`s something you have to eradicate from your game at any level of football. I was disappointed with those and also the third goal – a cross comes in and a lad`s allowed to head it from six yards out.’

The manager finished by putting a positive spin on the defeat, admitted he would have preferred to win the game but he now has plenty to focus on for the week ahead.

Birmingham will play a closed-door friendly against Tottenham Hotspur in their final preparations on Tuesday, but that is the last we’ll see of them until August 8th, versus Reading, on the opening day.

There were plenty of positives from yesterday’s display. Not least the reminder that the most pleasing bit of business Birmingham did this summer was to secure the services of Demarai Gray, the Championship should be on notice after that performance.
