Robinson Questions Gray Move

Birmingham could be set to lose Demarai Gray as their captain has taken to a media interview to urge the player to stay.

Are the players not confident of keeping him either?

“It would be great for Dimmy and his development as a player,” he said.

“If he goes to a Premier League club it could drown him a little bit in the sense of could he get pushed to Under-21s football?

Would Demarai Gray into a Premier League team? well it depends which team he goes to. Would he play at a club like Liverpool? no I don’t think he would.

He is a bright player but he does waste the ball in good positions at times and the standards are much higher at that level. The mood will change from ‘bright prospect’ here at Birmingham to ‘not good enough’ very quickly at a club like that.

“Yes, financially, it might be a fantastic opportunity for him but he has got his whole future ahead of him, he is only 18.

“He has got to sit down with the right people and have a chat with them and say ‘Is this the right time for me to do this or will I end up going there, and going out on loan?`

A similar situation has unfolded with Jack Butland. He waiting for the ‘right club’ and has found himself here there and everywhere in a bid for first team football.

So often young players who are treasured at one club, move elsewhere and are pushed to the side. Butland has managed some cup games for Stoke this month but has had to settle for a short loan spell at Derby up until November.

“For me it`s better that he stays here, develops as a player until the end of the season, and goes from there and makes that decision in the summer.

“He will go on to be an even better player if he stays here and plays week-in, week-out.”

Whether Gray stays or not won’t make or break his career, but should he go to the wrong club it will significantly slow down his development. First team football at Blues is near guaranteed now, but will he jump too soon? It’s looking likely if Robinson feels the need to talk publicly about it.

Would Butland be in a better position if he was still the number 1 in Blues goal? He’d probably be rated higher.

For me I think the money is what will do the talking. Gray hasn’t signed a new deal for a reason, he may want out and he wants his options open. So maybe the question is, will he pick the right club?
