Robbo’s new role could spark move for League Two defender

Paul Robinson`s new role as Assistant Manager to the U23 squad is likely to be the beginning of the end of his playing days. Although Robbo hasn`t officially hung up his boots, a conversation with Steve Cotterill indicated that Robinson will find his chances of game time very limited.

At present, Blues have four options in central defence – Harlee Dean, Marc Roberts, Michael Morrison and Robinson. Taking Robinson, the main back-up option, out of the equation, that leaves three which could cause issues if Cotterill decides to stick to a three man defence.

The Blues manager has drawn up a list of players he would like to sign in the January transfer window and it is thought a central defender is a high priority.

Despite being an admirer, Cotterill is unlikely to approach Bristol City for Aden Flint, a player Harry Redknapp coveted for so long in the summer window. Flint would cost around £10m and Cotterill simply doesn`t have that sort of budget to blow on one player.

Cotterill has made enquiries about Coventry City`s Jordan Willis. The 23 year-old former England U19 international was a product of the Sky Blues youth academy and has since clocked up 124 appearances for the first team – some as part of a three man defence.

Given their precarious financial situation, Coventry would be tempted to sell if the right offer was bought to the table but Cotterill also has other defenders in the forefront of his mind.
