Right is Wrong

Admiration should not be mistaken for blind loyalty. Blues need extra competition in both full back areas, that much is obvious.

But while Jonathan Grounds is usually the man to receive the most flack – sometimes fairly, sometimes unfairly – Paul Caddis is as average as they come.

Now please stay with me. I will always admire Caddis purely for the effort and desire he puts in week after week. And of course, he was the man who headed in the equaliser at Bolton on that day Blues looked destined for League One. I am not denying that he puts in the odd decent display but, more often than not, he highly lacking as a defender and an attacking outlet.

With ten opportunities to cross, nine either won’t beat the first man or they will sail into the stand after being hopelessly over hit.

Caddis also lacks pace which wouldn’t be a problem if his reading of the game and positional sense were good – but they’re not.

His biggest asset is his penalty taking, but as a defender, that’s a bit of a moot point (like a Doctor specialising in dentistry).

I’d love Gary Rowett to sign both a right back and a left back not only to offer competition to Caddis and Grounds, but also to start games.

It’s often been disputed that the central defensive area is Blues’ soft point. I’d argue that Blues ship more goals from wide areas and this must be addressed if we’re to have any chance of a play-off challenge.
