Birmingham City have this week loaned out 18 year old Will Packwood to Cheltenham Town, on an emergency loan until May 2nd 2015.

The American Centre Back, with only one first team appearance this season, had recently faced a loan move to Colchester United, although that deal came to an end earlier than expected, due to injury.

However, this season long departure can be cut short, as a recall option is available if needed by Birmingham. But with a lack of playing time at Blues, it would be in Packwood`s best interests to gain some first team experience at Cheltenham. This will definitely benefit his confidence.

Packwood is always a great physical presence on the pitch, but his confidence has let him down, which he will only gain whilst at Cheltenham. The 18 year old would often like to bring the ball down and play out from the back, yet he can definitely play the ‘ugly` game too!

He has shown his abilities at Under 21 level at Blues along with the Under 23`s for his country. He shows a lot of talent at such a young age, and is one to look out for in the future!

Along with this deal, young Central Midfielder Callum Reilly has agreed a loan move to Burton Albion; also for the rest of the season. Unlike Packwood, Reilly has seen a decent amount of first team action, mostly from the bench, but his abilities are rated differently by many Blues` fans. Divided opinions may have knocked the 21 year olds confidence, but this transfer could really give the Irish man a chance to show what he is all about.

Reilly shows signs of a good Central Midfielder, whether he is playing as a holding Midfielder, or in a more advanced role. I believe he shows good strength and willingness in the centre of the park, in terms of his defensive play. However, just like Packwood, he lacks that little bit of composure to move the ball around, and he sometimes makes silly errors. This will only improve with time, hence why this loan move should benefit Callum individually and the club as a whole.

Both players have not had as big an impact on the club recently compared to likes of Clayton Donaldson or David Cotterill, but personally, I think that with a little more experience under their belts, both players could see themselves playing regularly for Birmingham City, if they choose to stay at the club.
