David Sullivan has been his usual self on Soccer Am today by declaring that Birmingham almost signed Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2003.

Before joining Manchester United, Birmingham had made a £6 million offer for the player and had offered him a deal to come to the Midlands.

Sullivan claimed that he wasn’t the player we see today, which everyone is well aware of, and that there were doubts over his ability.

Back then Birmingham were establishing themselves in the Premier League and it is well known that Sullivan was also open to the idea of signing foreign players.

This story joins the long list of nearly deals that Sullivan has claimed to have in the pipeline over the years. I’m not saying it isn’t true, but it is pretty easy to make claims of almost transfers.

Players are given offers all the time and then choose the club they most want to play for, or the club they think will take them the furthest and make them the richest.

Ronaldo won’t be ruining any wrong decisions, though. The Ballon d’Or winner is up for nomination again this year and is favorite to retain the award after a glittering career to date.

I’d like to think that had he signed for Birmingham, he would have loved it so much he would have stayed for his whole career and we would have won plenty of stuff by now.
