Ranked: The top 5 Blues games from the 2019/20 season

|

In what is going to become hopefully a ritual now that football is on hiatus, Saturdays are going to be my ranking days, where I pick my top five from a certain topic that’s the do with the Blues. This week, I’m going to be going through what I think were the Blues’ top 5 games this season.

5, Birmingham 4 – 5 Leeds: Now it might seem a little bit weird to put start this list off with a game that we lost, but for sheer levels of ‘bonkers’ I don’t think you’ll get a better case than this game all season, be it with the Blues or across the whole division.

A game that went back and forth, and featured some rather exciting moments such as Lukas Jutkiewicz bringing us level twice, including deep into stoppage time, only for a late own goal to see the visitors take all three points.

4, Birmingham 3 – 3 Sheffield Wednesday: Another game that was very back and forth but doesn’t quite come to the levels of excitement that the Leeds United game, and at least this time we managed to get a point out of it.

Scott Hogan got his fourth goal in five games for the Blues after his move from Aston Villa to bag us a point as the Blues’ unbeaten run stretched to eleven.

3, Birmingham 2 – 1 Stoke City: You can make the argument that this was really the start of the ‘Jude Bellingham era’ at St Andrew’s, as this was the day that he scored his first goal for the club having only made his debut a few weeks previous.

The Blues came from behind that day, and after a Jutkiewicz with a header at the back post, then up stepped Bellingham to strike from distance and after a very heavy deflection put the Blues ahead. Queue mad celebrations in the Tilton End.

How many penalties did Lee Camp save in the league this past season?

2, Birmingham 2 – 1 Middlesbrough: Whilst it might not have been the greatest performance all round that night, it did give us two very special moments.

Arguably the best ‘team goal’ that we scored all season, as Fran Villalba scored his first and only goal for the club after some nice buildup. And then after a late Daniel Ayala goal levelled things up, young Odin Bailey arrived at the back post to score the winner and prove yet another masterstroke in Pep Clotet’s youth movement with the Blues.

1, Bristol City 1 – 3 Birmingham: This game takes the top billing because I think it was arguably our best performance of the whole season. Having gone behind very early, we managed to rally and put in an excellent shift against a side that was challenging for a top six spot in the league at the time.

And it was all nicely wrapped up with one of my favourite goals of the campaign, a nice and simple route one ball from Lee Camp to Jutkiewicz to finish the proceedings off.

That one came 6th on my list, if we were just doing ‘wins’ rather than ‘games’, it would have made it in
