Player of the Season – Part Three

So far this week we have seen two admirable nominations for Player of the Season from Rob Wildey and Luke Turner but now it is my time to discuss who I think is Birmingham City’s player of the season.

Rob nominated Lukas Jutkiewicz, who is currently Blues’ top goal scorer with 12 goals and Luke nominated David Davis, who is again one of the stand out performers for the club so although arguably the two main choices have already been chosen, I think the player I am about to put forward might come as a surprise to many.

So here we go…

Jonathan Grounds

I know everyone is probably thinking that I have got this all wrong but I’m afraid you are not mistake, I honestly think that Grounds has been one of our stand out performers this season.

Although he may not score every five or six weeks and he may not always have the best game defensively but he has been one of the most consistent names on the team sheet each week, even though the club is now on their third manager this season.

Under Gary Rowett, Grounds was the number one left back and this season under the now Derby County manager, Grounds only missed one game and that was through suspension.

Then, when Gianfranco Zola came into the club, Grounds was shifted from left back to centre back on a number of occasions but not once was he caught moaning about being moved there.

And now Harry Redknapp has come in and once again Grounds looks like he could be the clubs number one left back once again.

The 29-year-old has managed 43 games for the club this season in both the league and the cup. In those 43 games, Grounds has scored once but he has also managed to keep nine clean sheets.

That may not be that impressive but as the season has gone on I feel as though Grounds has managed to keep his performances levels at good enough standard and for me he is my player of the season.
