Pep Clotet gives update on injured man. Do club need to look for a replacement? – Report

What would you do in this situation?

Pep Clotet has given an update on the fitness of Maikel Kieftenbeld. Speaking to Birmingham Live about when we should be expecting the Dutchman to return, Clotet said:

“At least after New Year, which if we consider this kind of injury is at least six months minimum, he will not be far off the goal, training with the first team, then time to get fit. Probably he will end up on seven or eight months.”

So if we are to assume that he will not be back to training with the first team until after the New Year, then giving him a little bit of time to get fully up to match fitness, we’re probably going to be looking at him coming back around February time.

Now the question is, do we need to go out and buy someone in the January transfer window?

Given the amount of midfielders that the club have at their disposal, it’s not as if we’re at breaking point when it comes to the position and we need to bring in reinforcements, and given that we have the likes of Gary Gardner or Craig Gardner who can play that role it’s not crucial that we replace him.

What also factors into this, is the fact that his contract is set to expire at the end of the season, although the club do have the option of extending it for another 12 months, so if we wanted to keep him on and essentially get the full use out of him, then we have that option as well.

For those couple of months though, is it worth us dipping into the transfer market for a short-term loan to get cover, or should we leave things as they are?

What about you? Do you think that we need to sign a replacement for Kieftenbeld? Or do you think once he comes back from injury that we’ll all be OK?
