Paul Robinson has impressed with his recent performances, particularly in the 1-0 win against Fulham at St. Andrews last weekend. The 38-year-old has rolled back the years to make light of Blues’ defensive problems.

Michael Morrison has been ruled out for several weeks after undergoing a hernia operation and Ryan Shotton is nursing an injury of his own.

When the team sheet was released on Saturday, many hearts were in mouths when it became apparent that Robinson would be partner left back Jonathan Grounds in the heart of the back four – it had a makeshift feel about it.

But the performance of both players helped Blues record their first win under Gianfranco Zola and their first clean sheet in five games.

Now Zola has a decision to make. Robbo, who turns 39 this year, will be out of contract in the summer and Zola didn’t initially plan on offering the veteran a further year. It was thought that Robbo would continue with the coaching side of his career but on a slightly wider scale. But his recent displays may have given Zola food for thought.

As the seasons go by, Robinson is written off. He has to bide his time but rarely lets the team down when he is called upon.
