It’s no secret that club director Panos Pavlakis recommended and appointed Gianfranco Zola as Gary Rowett’s replacement and, reading between the lines, it seems that Pavlakis also fears for his position should Zola be relieved of his duties.

Blues fans turned on Zola during yesterday’s draw at Rotherham and that will spill over to St. Andrews on bank holiday Monday should Blues start slowly against Burton Albion.

Pavlakis was hailed a hero for dealing with the boardroom politics of the previous regime and played a massive part in forcing through a sale of the club.

It was a mistake hiring Zola though. If Pavlakis continues to keep faith in Zola – something the fans will not do – then he will lose even more respect and become a public enemy himself. However, admitting his error and sacking the manager will go some way to earning forgiveness on the terraces.

Birmingham City is more than a job. We appreciate everything Pavlakis has previously done for our club. But he must now swallow his pride and give Zola the chop.
