Optimism and Hope Ahead of Next Season

So, that’s all folks. August will be the next time I take my seat inside St. Andrew’s with renewed optimism, hope and a clean slate.

Friday’s entertaining draw against Middlesbrough saw Blues’ season summarised in 90 minutes. Two impressive strikes, two sloppy goals conceded, a good counter attacking display and some decent football. And of course, lots of heart and desire.

This Blues side may not have won any of their last six outings at home and may have won only once in their last ten, but fault them we cannot.

Clayton Donaldson has run himself into the ground all season and, although he should have more goals to his name, he is so important to the makeup of the team and will be again next term, I’m sure.

Stephen Gleeson has had an impressive season but has looked a little jaded recently. He rolled back the months with a great goal to mark a decent performance. And alongside him, Maikel Kieftenbeld was back to his bulldozing best.

Ryan Shotton looks like a player who doesn’t want the season to end after putting his case for a permanent move forward. Michael Morrison was his usual dominant self. Diego Fabbrini showed signs of the player we all know and love.

But the real shame as the season comes to an end is David Cotterill. The Welshman is back to his best. On his day, there are not many better crossers of the ball and he will be absolutely vital to Blues’ play-off chances next season, assuming he stays.

With one last away trip to Cardiff on the horizon, Blues can look forward to next season with confidence. Two or three good players stand between Blues and the Championship’s top dogs.
