Opinion: Was Robinson’s Card a Bad Thing?

There are few words that would fully describe Paul Robinson; he is an absolute leader and a real character. The 38 year old certainly has experience on the field but he acts like an 18 year old off it; full of vigour and enthusiasm. Not to mention the constant jokes that we all see on the official Birmingham City Snapchat story. Paul Robinson really is a real addition to the squad. He picks players up when they’re down and has all of the abilities to make things happen in terms of spirit and morale; something that has been crucial under the first few months of the Zola reign.

A further admirable quality about Robinson is that he has the ability to just fling himself in front of the ball. It sounds like an obvious thing for a defender to do but some barely even like heading the ball and therefore it is a quality which is certainly to be appreciated rather than to be taken for granted. He has played for numerous clubs in his long tenure, but yet he still plays for the badge on the shirt as though he is a fan. A really great captain.

The reason why I decided to write an article about Paul isn’t really to do with this or to do with his sending off really, it’s to show that we should have more players with a little bit of passion. Now, I don’t condone violence or any form of fighting on the pitch in order to get a red card because that is letting your team mates down not just in that game but for the next 3. However, I must say it was good to see Robinson, who seems to be appealing against the ban, react how he did.

Too often especially under Lee Clark we have been a bit too nice. Remember the days of Stephen Carr and Robbie Savage. Teams used to hate to play against us because we were known for being physical and we wouldn’t give up without a fight. Robinson took this to an extreme level but it is good that we are now seeing players having that drive and passion to really knuckle down and play like terriers. It is something that has been lacking for quite some time now. I am aware that it was a derby game and things often get a little bit more heated but why can’t we have that passion every game? We need to go in hard with tackles and try and compete for every ball in every game. If we do that then results will come. Yes, the 3 points against Wolverhampton Wanderers is always a positive but it is the determination shown by the players that really is the thing to look at positively from that game. Who better to carry on this aggression than Leeds United.
