Recently, Gary Rowett has said that he is looking at ways to try and incorporate both Toral and Fabbrini into the Birmingham City side. This, I’m sure most of you would agree, would be brilliant as they’re two of our better players. But if only one can fit into a sensible formation, who would be chosen?

Firstly, despite not giving a full picture, I’m going to look at their stats. Toral has played significantly more games than Fabbrini, so it is not a fair reflection. But Toral has made 28 appearances, scoring 6 goals and assisting 3 times. This shows that he can be a match winner whether that be contributing to goals himself, or helping the team gain attacking influence. He also has 30 fouls against him which shows he isn’t scared of a tackle.

Fabbrini, including his previous loan spell at the club, has made 8 appearances for the club, scoring 0 goals. Toral had a goal every 5 games or so. Therefore it is not too dissimilar but it would be good to see Fabbrini contribute in future, albeit he has not had much game time. I am well aware this isn’t the most accurate comparison.

In terms of physicality, I think that Toral also beats Diego on that front. He looks more physical more than anything else but he has that aggression that is missing from a few players game. He goes into every challenge fully committed and is one of the rare attackers that is eager to get back and help out his team mates. Diego is good at tracking back and he follows his man but I can’t see him being as effective in a shoulder barge scenario.

In terms of technique, we have seen what they are both capable of. Toral is more rugged, more powerful. His finishes have been very good in particular that volley that we all will never forget. Fabbrini is more delicate. He controls the ball with the greatest of ease and often brings it under his spell immediately.

Who would I play? After writing this article, I am afraid I am sitting on the fence. They both offer very different things and it really does depend on the opposition. But I feel that we should feel lucky to have them both at the club. Considering Toral is only on loan, it is good to utilise him while we can though.
