On Saturday, Birmingham City produced arguably their best 45 minutes of football for this current campaign and Blues boss Gary Rowett will be hoping that it isn’t the last time we see play like it.

The team made up of signings totalling £410,000 simply brushed aside the squad that was worth a combined fee of over £30 million and if you were to watch the game back again, you would have to say it looked like Blues were the side with the money.

Like the title says, money doesn’t always mean magic and on Saturday that was certainly the case, unless you look closely at the hidden gem that Birmingham City have uncovered.

Maikel Kieftenbeld has to be the best £160,000 that any football club has spent in the past five seasons. His willingness to get forward and defend at the same time is just amazing to watch.

The Dutch midfielder now has two goals to his name for the season and during his interviews on the official youtube channel of the Blues you can see just how much playing week in, week out means to him.

If we look at the comparisons between Kieftenbeld and the Rams midfielder Bradley Johnson from Saturday’s game, you would probably have said that it was the Blues man who was worth £6 million, not the other way round.

Yes, you can look at the table and go Derby deserve to be up there towards to top end of the Sky Bet Championship table but so do Blues.

Rowett has worked wonders with what he has been given in terms of transfer budget and I think you will find it difficult to see another manager anywhere else in the country do what the former Burton Albion manager is doing at the moment.

Paul Clement, the Derby County manager, singled individuals out after the game against Blues and their previous fixture against Reading and that is the major difference between the two bosses.

For Rowett it is all about creating a good atmosphere in and around the club and the way he does that is by making sure everybody is happy. It isn’t all about the money to him and it is clear to see how much he is enjoying his time with the club.

However, when you look at Clement, it now seems like he is losing his players one by one and that is happening because he is singling players out. There is no unity in that camp and that was very clear to see on Saturday.

As Birmingham City defender Paul Robinson said, ‘the team beat the individuals of Derby County’.

Blues fans, do you agree that money doesn’t always buy you success? Are you surprised at how easily Blues overturned Derby on Saturday? Let us know in the comment section down below!
