I have to say, Birmingham City have exceeded my early season expectations by a mile!

Like most fans, I was cautiously optimistic heading into the new season. I say cautiously optimistic because there weren’t many new players coming into the fold but with the contract renewals, things were indeed looking up.

Fans who were less optimistic, yes I know there was only a handful, have all been proved wrong by the early season fortunes.

They may have been laughing during preseason when results weren’t going our way but since the important games have arrived, every player, old and new, has worked their socks off for Gary Rowett and they have all reaped the rewards for their efforts.

Blues have faced six games so far this campaign and have faired well in all of them, some better than others.

However, we have showed that we can play with the big spenders and still come away with something!

In the first game against Reading, we looked comfortable on the ball and we were deservedly two goals up inside 50 minutes. Despite conceding and being very fortunate at the end of the game, we still looked like we were going to win the game.

That result was a sign of things to come. Rowett’s men then headed to League Two side Bristol Rovers who proved more of a test than many thought.

Goals from Jacques Maghoma and Andy Shinnie wrapped up the points in what was a game where Blues could have slipped up but they didn’t!

Heading to Burnley, some fans didn’t really know what to expect, myself included. But we were shown just how much quality this set of players has.

Loanee Jon Toral netted his second in as many league games and Paul Caddis stepped up to smash home a controversial penalty and Blues took home a well deserved point, which could and probably should have been three.

The game against the Clarets was for me the most impressive I have to say. It showed that even though we didn’t have a lot of the ball, when we did have it, we were effective and we caused them problems.

After the Burnley game, we faced yet another tough test and this was possibly the most uncomfortable we have looked so far this year.

The pace of the Derby attack was something that we just couldn’t deal with but thanks to some fantastic defending by Jonathan Spector, we walked out of St.Andrews with a point against another of the leagues big spenders.

Moving on, Blues faced another potential banana skin in the cup with high flying Gillingham visiting us.

For me, this game showed that even when we rotate the side, we have enough quality to finish games off and it also gave us a chance to see what new signing Nicolai Brock-Madsen was about. This game showed much promise!

Going into the final game of the month, Blues were on a high. The high rose just that little bit more when Stephen Gleeson and Jacques Maghoma scored a goal each to make sure we beat MK Dons at the stadium MK.

The game against the Dons was the one I feel we looked most comfortable in. Please feel free to correct me if I am wrong but if we see more performances like the one against Karl Robinson’s side this year, we could have plenty more 6-1’s on our hands.

August was a very fruitful month for Rowett’s men and I have a feeling there is still a lot more to come!
