Another season opener, another disappointing day for the travelling bluenoses.

We`ve never started fast in the league over recent years, but Saturday`s display at Portman Road was a particularly drab affair.

Ipswich Town are a team short of investment and any real top quality, but Blues looked very inept and in dire need of a creative spark.

We all knew that Blues would need a striker and a winger, and we weren`t wrong. Unfortunately Clayton Donaldson is simply not good enough, and this highlights the need of someone like Hull City striker Abel Hernandez.

Hull`s record signing was not up to standard in the Premier League, and he has been transfer listed for the majority of the summer.

Due to another disappointing season in the Premier League it is unlikely he would fetch the £10m price tag Hull splashed on him a few years ago.

I think Blues would benefit from Hernandez if they consider solely his Championship record, when he hit 20 goals two seasons ago.

We are crying out for a proven striker at this level if we are seriously going to challenge at the right end of the table.

Hernandez often likes to have another striker playing off him, and I feel Che Adams would suit that role well with the pace he possesses.

Saturday showed that the Blues board will have to dig a little deeper into their pockets if they are ambitious.

With league matches now coming thick and fast, we need to inject the squad with some goals, and I think Hull might be willing to let Hernandez go for less than they got him.
