Days before the end of the January transfer window, Birmingham City boss Gary Rowett brought Ryan Shotton into the club on a loan deal which runs until the end of the season.

The Blues manager stated that he only really likes to work with players who he can secure on a longer deal upon the expiry of their initial move which indicates that a permanent move for the Derby County defender could be on the cards.

Last weekend, the on loan defender made his full debut for the club away at Rotherham United and he certainly made an impression keeping a clean sheet and making several vital interceptions.

Unlike fellow loanee, James Vaughan, Shotton’s deal with his parent club runs until the summer of 2017 which would mean Blues would have to pay a fee for his services, but that isn’t out of reach now we have seen that we can pay money for players.

If Blues were to make a move for the 27 year old versatile defender, I am sure that it would prove to be a fruitful one for the club but it could see chances for the likes of Paul Robinson, Jonathan Spector and maybe even Paul Caddis become limited.

As most fans will know, Shotton can play at either right back or centre back which would mean that if Rowett brought him in on a permanent deal, he would be looking for him to be in and around the first team.

Should that be the case, the three previously mentioned players would all have to be aware that Shotton would be gunning to take their place in the team, as Caddis has already found out after he was dropped for the game at the New York Stadium.

Personally, I would like to see Shotton return to the club next season, hopefully on a full time deal, but there would have to be a fair bit of negotiating in terms of wages as it is my understanding that he is on just under £20,000 a week.

However, if there is the opportunity to play regular first team football for a side who just keep improving all the time then what’s to say that he wouldn’t take a pay cut.

Blues fans, can you see Gary Rowett making a move for Ryan Shotton in the summer? Would he be a good permanent addition to our squad? Let us know in the comment section down below!
