Just 5 days ago, our editor Tom ran a poll asking which part of the squad we think should be increased in the January transfer window. In this poll, 63% of you decided that it was in fact the attack that was lacking and that we needed to improve in order to fit Zola’s style of play as well as to pull ourselves up the league table. Only 7% suggested that we needed to improve the midfield but yet Gardner has been brought back to the club since then. I think he brings quality but did we really need to invest in this area of the team?

We have Tesche, Kieftenbeld, Gleeson and Davis all doing well in that position with Brown, Arthur and Fabbrini pushing on a bit further up the field. So was the inclusion of Gardner just to win the fans back after the whole Rowett saga? I don’t like to look at things cynically but I do believe that this is part of the truth. Either way, I am not complaining, he is a good addition to the squad. As we all know with his previous spell at the club, he does find the net from midfield which is a huge bonus. A skill often overlooked in midfield but it is certainly a great thing to have when attackers are not firing on all cylinders.

Recently, I have seen a lot of fans on social media saying that we need to invest in a new attacker this transfer window. Now, I’d firstly just say that most clubs are reluctant to sell in January so it often means less deals can be struck than in Summer (other than loans). This is because a player usually isn’t at the end of the contract so a pay out will be made. So it is hard to revamp a squad at the current time. But there may be a chance to get a striker and Zola may well take it although I am not too sure that he should.

If all of the current attacking options are fit, then we have Donaldson, Adams, Lukas and maybe Stewart but he is preferred out wide. If we are playing 1 up front like Rowett used to prefer, then we have a decent squad for this. Any one of those three could do that role as long as there was a number 10 to support. Even now, this could work if Fabbrini sat behind. They can also play well together. Che has good pace and strength which compliments Lukas and Donaldson who are both better in the air. All 3 are at Championship level and so it’s not like we have someone just there to collect a wage and not give much on the field. I have heard reports that Rhodes is looking for a loan move. Considering how potent he was for Blackburn when he played there, I would love it if we could bring him in on loan but if a striker that is unproven is bought, then I think they could become surplus to requirements.

  • I think yes we possibly do need another striker unless Adams can start chipping in with a few goals, I don’t think it worked when Don & The Juke played together. I think we desperately need another LB & CB 1st though. We could also do with a left footed winger. I said the other day that I wasn’t sure about Gardner coming back but I was wrong there, after watching his interview with Tatts you can see just how much Blues means to him, he’s raring to go & could be vital to our push up the table

  • We need a striker especially as it seems Donaldson is close to the end. Adams contributes to the system but does need to score more goals. Jutkiewicz is our goal scorer but could do with someone taking some of the burden.

  • This is the reason why I questioned the loan out of Storer. We need backup players if we have an injury to a main player. If Che or Juke pick up an injury then we will either be playing wingers up top or relying on unproven youngsters. Maybe that is why GZ is trying VSO up top. With his pace I think he could be devastating.

  • We need a poacher who has good positional sense and knows how to finish. A Kevin Phillips type, but anyone like thIs will be out of our range unless we can get one on loan.
Strikers are only any good if they get good service and this is why the midfield has to be addressed. By midfield I mean creative and attacking midfielder. Gardner is a great central midfielder but not an attacking midfielder, but all the same he will provide service to those who are.

  • Have to disagree with gazel. Gardner can be an attacking midfielder when need be.He scores from all positions and decent power. However,do we need an extra striker? Our current strike force apart from Juke is pretty awful,so we need to get a good’un in alongside juke.Donaldson who must retain our respect is Rowett type and this may not suit Zola. Brighton,Newcastle and Reading do not play the big target men with Derby doing the same. My advice to Zola-do a deal with Cotterill and Donaldson for a live wire poacher in the Billy Sharp mould.

  • Adams will be an interesting issue.Under Zola this player may well blossom into a proper attacking force. No better than Zola to be his mentor.

  • We have played with one striker for to long ….Mark the striker out of the game and you have no teeth , it has to be two strikers to get promotion , unless you have unless you have Higgs Robson lampard and Ronaldo in midfield to score many goals .You can have two great goalscorers up front but unless a couple of midfield players can score and the defence chip in with 8 or 10 goals you still won’t get anywhere …But whatever you need around 80 goals in a season with 6 defenders and 5 attackers ,,,One player being good at defence and attack , that seems to be the best arrangement to use …
