Everytime that I write an article about our midfield maestro, David Davis, it always baffles me how his parents seemed to think that a repeated first name and surname seemed to sound good. However, it makes copying and pasting his name easier. Upon googling him also, the MP David Davies seems to come up as a higher search showing what is wrong with this modern society.

Enough of politics, lets talk football as this is what the website is all about. Now, a lot of players in recent times have stood out. None more so than our new hero, Lukas Jutkiewicz; a slightly harder name to spell than Davis. Often it is the striker who is in form that gets all of the mentions or if a goalkeeper has saved a penalty or shot which in turn has kept us in the game at a crucial time.

But it is often the players that are not mentioned, that actually do all of the background work that enables the more flamboyant players to show off their skills. David Davies is certainly one of those players. Despite not being known for scoring, he chips in with important goals as we all saw in the derby against Aston Villa. I’m sure it is still fresh in all of our memories. But how many other goals can you think of that Davis has scored? In 92 appearances he has score 7 goals so fair enough, a lot of them will have been forgotten but this isn’t his game and so we can’t always judge a player on goals scored.

What Davis does is he breaks up play. His positioning is so disciplined that he is able to block of routes that the opposition would have exploited. A dangerous ball to defend is that between the full back and the centre back which goes through to the advancing winger. Davis often screens this slot which makes the player on the ball either play backwards or sidewards and allows Birmingham City to really capitalise on the pressing game.

If he is fully fit, I think he should be a regular starter. He is one of our best players and despite coming from Wolves, he seems to have embraced the Blues shirt with the utmost respect. I would like to see him get more recognition, not just for goals against Villa, but for his ability to help the team defensively.
