When Birmingham City announced that they were bringing Craig Gardner back to the club in January 2017, it was meant to be a sign of things to come.

The former Carling Cup winner was supposed to be the man who turned things round on the pitch for the club during Gianfranco Zola’s reign as manager but things never quite worked out for either of them.

In the last four games, Gardner has had to settle for a place on the substitutes bench, something which he wanted to get away from at West Bromwich Albion, so why is he settling for it here at Blues?

Although it remains unclear as to what Harry Redknapp plans to do with him, the 30-year-old should take a leaf out of Emilio Nsue’s book and grab what could be his last chance before it is too late for him.

Blues now have a whole host of players who can play in the central role and Gardner is just one of many who can be called upon to make a difference.

At the moment, it looks like Liam Walsh, Jason Lowe, David Davis and Cheikh Ndoye are all ahead of the Solihull-born midfielder but that should spur him on to make more of an effort in training.

It is clear for all to see that on his day, Gardner can have a great impact on the pitch so he shouldn’t be settling for just having an influence in the dressing room, we need him back on the pitch.

Yes Blues are moving in an entirely new direction but it is up to the player as to whether he wants to move with the team or stand stationary waiting for his opportunity.

Gardner clearly has the clubs best interests at heart so he should be putting everything on the line to show Redknapp he is worth another shot.

Maybe that shot will come this weekend against Preston North End but if it does come, Gardner best be ready to take it with both hands.
