Opinion: Blues’ deadline day signing brings up more questions than answers

|

Let’s be honest, did anybody see this one coming?

Given the amount of smokescreens that Aitor Karanka was throwing our way before deadline day, I think most of us expected it to be very quiet except for potentially a few outgoings, which did happen in the form of Charlie Lakin making a move to Ross County up in Scotland.

But then out of nowhere, Blues announced the signing of Australian Riley McGree on a season-long loan. As Brian Dick pointed out on social media, it’s not as straight forward as it might seem, but the long and short of it is that he’s here for the season.

I’m not 100% sure what to make of this deal, because once again it comes back to the talk of whether or not we have too many options to choose from at certain positions, in this case central attacking midfield, which now finds the spots filled with the likes of Jon Toral, Dan Crowley, even Scott Hogan to an extent ‘playing off’ Lukas Jutkiewicz and now McGree.

Blues will sign ____ more players this window?

And whilst it appears as though he is very highly thought of, at least according to this article from Birmingham Live, I just don’t see where he is going to fit into the team on a regular basis. And if he does, then whose spot is he going to take in the starting line-up?

What about you? What do you make of McGree signing for us? And what sort of role do you expect/hope him to take up at St Andrew’s?
