The Birmingham Mail are reporting that Birmingham City have stepped up their interest in Barnsley defender Marc Roberts.

The club have made an enquiry with Harry Redknapp keen on bringing the 26-year-old to St. Andrew`s this summer.

With Blues looking set to miss out on John Terry to Aston Villa, it’s refreshing to see that Redknapp has an alternative which could well be the better option.

If we compare the two, there is a 10 year age gap between Roberts and Terry. Although the latter is glittered with trophies and Premier League appearances, he is likely to only have a year or two left in him.

The 36-year-old would also command an extremely high wage for the Championship and that money could be spent elsewhere.

Of course, if Blues did somehow manage to lure Terry to the club, then it would be a huge acquisition and an impressive one at that.

But, if we’re being realistic, the best option for the long-term would be to pursue a move for Roberts.

Just two years ago, he was playing for Halifax Town but was made the Barnsley captain following the departure of Conor Hourihane in January.

He would bring with him not only some extremely promising quality on the pitch, but he would also offer leadership qualities.

Although he’s only had one season in the Championship, he’s proven that he’s well equipped for the league and has the potential to develop into something even better.

Barnsley are apparently demanding up to £5m for the centre back but, in my opinion, that price would be a steal for Blues.

You only have to look at the likes of Alfie Mawson who developed at Barnsley and is now a Premier League regular with Swansea.

With Roberts still yet to hit the peak of his career, he may well be just the player Blues need to help them have a successful season that will hopefully lead to a promotion to the Premier League.

  • Yeah right Luke. You didn’t want him anyway.

As a reader I expect honesty from any writer. If this is your take then you’re no better than the Villa fans.

  • Marc Roberts, is a good defender and in the long run would be a better option than Terry, 5m is a snip for Roberts, I cant see Barnsley letting him go for that don’t forget Everton have been scouting him no offer as ever been made but they ant looking at him for nothing. Crystal palace are also linked and are expected to make an offer so 6.5m to 7m is a more realistic price. If we can get Roberts, even if we have to pay 7m he will be a very good sighing. But I bet half of the championship clubs think the same and then there are the mid table primer league clubs to beat off.

  • Real key to all this is to get strikers in who can score flipping goals. Forget the obsession with Centre Backs,Wing backs etc. we have decent cover defensively but as an attacking force we are woeful. Hope Harry steps up the search and concentrates on getting players in that can score two goals per game.Simple logic yes but at Blues we are starved of such offerings.

  • Ohio sorry mate but I have to disagree we only have 2 viable first team CB we cant keep relying on Robo yes he could play but he is a cotch before he is a player now, We would have to be in desperate need to have too play him so its just Morison, and shorten, unless you count Ground, But what happened if ether of them are injured we have to use Grounds at CB and then we lose the only other left back we will be in treble. We need 4 CD’s. like most teams have If we cant get a CB we need a left back so we can then use Grounds, as cover. I believe we have offers/bids in for strikers we need one more at least because Donaldson is leaving! Apparently he is in talks with Burton & Doncaster.

  • For a club who’s fans lost all patience with the former owners ..blues do seem a bit slow at spending money ..and even bidding for players ..we have to be careful , but hey there ain’t that many good players available so either we get in first or risk failure…kro
