The Birmingham Mail are reporting that Birmingham City have stepped up their interest in Barnsley defender Marc Roberts.

The club have made an enquiry with Harry Redknapp keen on bringing the 26-year-old to St. Andrew`s this summer.

With Blues looking set to miss out on John Terry to Aston Villa, it’s refreshing to see that Redknapp has an alternative which could well be the better option.

If we compare the two, there is a 10 year age gap between Roberts and Terry. Although the latter is glittered with trophies and Premier League appearances, he is likely to only have a year or two left in him.

The 36-year-old would also command an extremely high wage for the Championship and that money could be spent elsewhere.

Of course, if Blues did somehow manage to lure Terry to the club, then it would be a huge acquisition and an impressive one at that.

But, if we’re being realistic, the best option for the long-term would be to pursue a move for Roberts.

Just two years ago, he was playing for Halifax Town but was made the Barnsley captain following the departure of Conor Hourihane in January.

He would bring with him not only some extremely promising quality on the pitch, but he would also offer leadership qualities.

Although he’s only had one season in the Championship, he’s proven that he’s well equipped for the league and has the potential to develop into something even better.

Barnsley are apparently demanding up to £5m for the centre back but, in my opinion, that price would be a steal for Blues.

You only have to look at the likes of Alfie Mawson who developed at Barnsley and is now a Premier League regular with Swansea.

With Roberts still yet to hit the peak of his career, he may well be just the player Blues need to help them have a successful season that will hopefully lead to a promotion to the Premier League.
