It was announced this afternoon that Birmingham City have activated the one-year extension option in David Davis’ contract and I thought it would only be right to comment on it.

To be fair to Davis, this season probably hasn’t been as consistent as he would have liked it to have been with Maikel Kieftenbeld joining in the summer, but when he has come into the side he has been a stand out player for us.

In Sundays game against his old side and local rivals, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Davis was given the Man of the Match award by us and Sky Sports and his performances in every game that he has been involved in merit that award.

His performances also merit this contract extension and because of how versatile he is, Blues boss Gary Rowett will be delighted that he has been able to sign Davis up until the summer of 2017.

Since joining the club in August 2014, Davis has gone on to make 73 appearances for the Blues and it is fair to say that the majority of the games he plays, you can see how much it means to him to be playing for the club.

He has unbelievable passion when he pulls on that Blues shirt and I think having a player like Davis in the squad is always going to be a good thing.

Rowett has asked him to play in a number of positions this year, whether that be wide on the right hand side, as a central defensive midfielder or just as a central midfielder, but in every position that he has played for us this campaign he has been superb.

Personally, I can’t think of him having a bad game for us and even though he doesn’t score many goals, he is always a willing runner and he has been key to our success in some games.

I would like to actually see Davis start a few more games, possibly ahead of summer signing Kieftenbeld, and that is hard to say because Kieftenbeld has been fantastic since he has come in, but I think Davis deserves his chance to start games in a full strength team alongside Stephen Gleeson.

Activating the one-year option in Davis’ contract is a good move by Blues and I think it is one that we will reap the benefits from.
