Football is a funny old game as has been quoted several times throughout the years and nobody can testify against this. Sometimes, the better team loses and sometimes a team at the bottom of the table beats a high flyer. But for the most part, the better team on the day does tend to win. It’s a game of tactics as well as skill and this is why so many managers are getting the sack rather than the players.

But why am I telling you things that you already know? It’s because I like to be positive about football and about our football club. It appears that some fans have forgotten the rather drab games under Lee Clark as I have seen many people especially on social media be critical about the team recently and about specific players.

Before his brilliant performance on Saturday, Cotterill was the man whom we had targeted as rather letting the side down. But he had had a full summer of football whilst others had rested whilst also having to adapt to a new style of play that we have now adopted. He also has to form a partnership with Shotton instead of the different style that Caddis brings. So all in all it would take time and it appears that it’s starting to click into place now which is really encouraging but it is disappointing to see so many people disregard players based on a slow start or a one off bad performance.

That brings me to the Blackburn Rovers game which we won 1-0 on Saturday. Yes, the opposition are towards the bottom of the Championship but they were on a bit of a run in the league picking up points in previous games and Emnes appeared to have started to make things happen up top. Due to this, it wasn’t going to be an easy game and considering we are play-off challengers, a lot of teams below us in the table will look to defend rather than push men forward. This type of opposition, we did not deal well with last season; it was a real weakness trying to unlock a wall of players. But on Saturday we were able to draw their defence out and really exploit the gaps in their back line.

Not to mention it was yet another clean sheet for our defence which seemed almost incomprehensible just a few seasons ago to get so many shut outs for want of a better phrase. We gained 3 points from a potential banana skin fixture but I noticed a lot of negativity after the game. Many people were saying that we should have put the game to bed instead of sitting back. This may be the case but we gained maximum points and it’s not always about trying to attack; it’s quite a simple game really whereby all you have to do is score more goals than the opposition. For me, it was a great performance because we were able to really press high and stop them from playing and this is very positive to see.
