Old man Stephen Clemence, vice captain to Damien Johnson, has been speaking about the fact he is now one of the more senior players at the grand old age of 28.
He told the Birmingham Mail:
‘It has been a little bit strange, especially when people like yourself and the gaffer keep saying to me ‘oldest outfield player’ and so on.’
‘I don’t feel quite ready for that! Bruno N’Gotty’s now the oldest since he came in, but I suppose I’m getting those sort of comments because I’ve been here a few seasons now.’
‘I’m still young, 28, with a good few years left.’
Bruce has worked hard this summer to bring down the average age of the squad, which the mail says is now 23. The average last season was 28.
Clemence says before thinking of any extra responsibilities he has to get on and ‘do my job first’ adding ‘If I can set a good example, along with the other senior players, hopefully that will rub off.’
He also says that Johnson, who is now the Blues longest serving player, will make a good captain, ‘I think Jonty is a good appointment. He leads by what he does on the pitch, no doubt about that. It was what everyone was expecting anyway, for him to get the job.’
