Martin O’Connor has backed the current Birmingham City boss to shape the kind of team that the fans at the club can be proud of. In an interview with the Birmingham Mail, the former team mate of Rowett, was sure Blues would handle the pressure of last season.

It seems the main focus of what Martin O’Connor was trying to get across in his statements was that a team made of the right spirit is one that will be there or there about come the end of the season.

“He`s got to assemble a squad that`s hard to beat, hard working, aggressive, enthusiastic and full of desire.

“The fans will back you if you show those values and I`m sure he`s on the way to creating that squad.’
O’Connor said when talking about Gary Rowett and what he needs to build.

The former Blues man is right, the fans of most clubs respond well to teams that show all of the things he mentions above. It’s almost like a fair trade off, the fans will still back the team despite a lower calibre of quality so long as the players subscribe to a certain way of going about their job.

I lot of the comments Rowett makes are more than that I would put forward. Yes he certainly likes well organised teams who are very tough to beat, but I don’t think for a second he is content with just that – being hard to beat.

Rowett often talks about giving youth a chance, ensuring that the players are eating right/training right – maximising their performance; finally he also tried to broaden the tactical style of players he has so he can manage the way games are going more effectively.

Birmingham under Rowett, I would imagine will be tough to beat, sat further back and organised. But, with that I do expect to see a style of play emerge to break down teams and move the club to the next level.

The former Birmingham man also gave Rowett a slight chance of hitting the play-offs, however did effectively say it would be a long shot – which I think we all kind of know.

“Is it realistic? Yes.

“But it`s a big ask. Over the course of a season it`s tough.’
