No Blues move for Stevie Mac

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid star Steve McManaman has said he will not become a director of Birmingham City following speculation in the media.

There had been speculation that Carson Yeung, who despite his failed takeover of the club still holds 29.9 per cent of the shares, wanted to a place on the board for McManaman and veteran Chinese footballer Fan Zhiy so that his interests were represented.

McManaman told Setanta Sports: “(It is) not true. It was in the papers but I`m not interested in becoming a director of Birmingham City at the moment. Everything you read is wrong.”

Though if “everything you read is wrong” then perhaps his denial is wrong. Or perhaps it was correct when he said it but then became wrong when it was written down…or not!

While it would be great to forget all of the takeover speculation, especially as a deal has been ruled out for the short-term at least, it seems unlikely that rumours and claims will vanish while Yeung still holds shares in the club.

And as long as Steve McManaman remains an executive director of Yeung’s Grandtop International Holdings, wild (or not so wild) claims linking him with a position at St Andrews will also continue…!
