With the arrival of Legzdins and Kuszczak over the summer in order to replace Randolph, Townsend has slipped down the pecking order.

As a young goalkeeper, he is not experienced and therefore Rowett has decided to send him out on loan to the League One outfit of Barnsley.

On the official site it explains that it will be a ‘youth loan’ up until ‘1st November 2015 with a 28 day recall option.’

I think this is a brilliant loan for Townsend. Previously he has been on loan at Lincoln City which the official site also documents. Barnsley is a step up and if he listens in training and also is a regular starter, then key attributes will be developed.

The short time frame as well as the recall option may be due to Rowett being cautious. If one of the other ‘keepers gets injured, then he may have to trigger this option.

I personally think that a season long loan would have been more beneficial but this offer may not have been on the cards. So the outcome of some time on loan is still a good one in my view.

He has also had pre-season with the Blues’ which is also good as he has become familiar with the new signings and he also will be at peak fitness for when he is called upon in League One.
