Birmingham City have announced that young forward Alex Jones will be returning to the club following the collapse of his move to Wellington Phoenix.

According to the clubs official website, the world governing body, FIFA, have refused to accept Jones’ registration with the New Zealand based club.

The club state that both Phoenix and themselves got all the paperwork through to the right people on time but it was the countries officials who failed to submit the relevant online documentation on time.

Jones’ case was considered by FIFA’s Player Status Committee and unfortunately for both clubs and the player, the disappointing news was delivered today.

Taken from the official site, New Zealand Football Competitions manager Daniel Farrow said in a statement: “While FIFA acknowledged the individual circumstances at NZF which led to the delay of Alex`s transfer, they have ruled to protect the integrity of their global deadlines for the transfer of players.’
