New boys give Rowett a selection headache

The international break arrived at a convenient time for Blues’ new arrivals Lukas Jutkiewicz and Rhoys Wiggins.

Of course they would have been eager to get their Blues careers going, but the value of having a full week of training with their new team mates cannot be underestimated.

Jutkiewicz has been drafted in to offer extra competition and another option in the forward areas. When Clayton Donaldson was injured last season, Blues struggled. Jutkiewicz can offer a similar style of play to his Jamaican colleague.

Blues also have Che Adams, Greg Stewart and Jack StorerĀ  (when he returns from suspension) vying for the forward berths along with the aforementioned Donaldson and Jutkiewicz – so Gary Rowett is suddenly inundated with choices.

It’s a slightly different story for the other new boy, Wiggins. He is in direct competition with Jonathan Grounds for the left back slot. Many Blues fans assume Wiggins will go straight into the team at Fulham on Saturday, but Grounds won’t go down without a fight after having his best game in a Blues shirt against Norwich City.

Wiggins isĀ  a slightly more forward-thinking full back than Grounds. The Welshman is of the Paul Caddis mould – but let’s cross our fingers that he can defend better than the Scot.

A few weeks ago, the squad at Rowett’s disposal looked very thin on the ground. But as Blues approach a trip to Craven Cottage this weekend, Rowett’s selection headache will be a good one to have.
