Tunisian international Mehdi Nafti wants to know what Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish expects from him before he takes part in the African Nations Cup in the New Year.

The 29-year-old midfielder, who joined from Racing Santander in 2005, is out of contract in the summer and he is keen to know about what the future he has at St Andrews.

McLeish has said talks will take place with Nafti – they are “on the list (of things to do) but a wee bit down it”. The boss will also hold talks with keeper Maik Taylor, who has previously sad he wants to remain at the club when his contract expires in the summer.

Nafti was quoted by the Birmingham Post as saying: “I want to make sure my future is sorted out because I’m in the last year of my contract. I went to the manager to find out what he expects from me before I go to Africa.

“I just want to know about my future at the club. It’s important for my own mind to know before I go away so we will have to see. The reaction from the manager has been positive. I played in his first two games before being suspended for Saturday’s game with Reading and he has been happy with me.”

Nafti has admitted he expects to have to fight for his place when he returns from international duty, and is happy to do so. Hopefully the players will perform well in his absence and Nafti will return to Birmingham ready to pick up where he has left off.
