My Blues Dream Team

Since my first Blues game in 1992, we have witnessed some very decent players – and some absolute stinkers. I have got my thinking cap on and have picked my best Birmingham City eleven. Only one rule applies, I must have seen the players play myself (which explains Trevor Francis` exclusion). I have tried to pick a balanced team.

GOALKEEPER – Ian Bennett
Benno was a great goalkeeper and a loyal servant to Blues, he gets the nod ahead of obvious other choices such as Joe Hart, Ben Foster and Maik Taylor. Bennett`s tiny frame never held him back between the sticks as he displayed his excellent shot stopping ability.

RIGHT BACK – Stephen Carr
Sorry Mr.Rowett, you`ve been pipped by Stephen Carr. The former Blues captain was a machine. His defending ability and attacking tendencies made him a pleasure to watch, and he was a passionate captain too.

CENTRE BACK – Kenny Cunningham
King Kenny is easily one of the most accomplished defenders I have seen in a Blues shirt. His positional play was superb and he formed a great partnership with Matty Upson.

CENTRE BACK – Matthew Upson
Upson gets the nod ahead of contenders Steve Bruce and Liam Daish due to his formidable partnership with Cunningham. A tall lad who was good in the air in both boxes and his tackling was top drawer. The perfect fit alongside Kenny.

LEFT BACK – Martin Grainger
The G-man was a rock and would run through one for the team. A solid defender with a sweet left foot and tough in the tackle. A proper ‘Blues` kind of player.

RIGHT MIDFIELD – Jose Dominguez
The Portuguese winger won his way into many Blues fans hearts with his dazzling displays. Full of pace and skill, the mini-maestro was a joy to watch.

CENTRE MIDFIELD – Robbie Savage
Love him or hate him, Savage was the engine for Blues. His wholehearted performances epitomised everything Blues were about.

CENTRE MIDFIELD – Bryan Hughes
Alongside Savage, Hughes` goal scoring ability from midfield and his deep runs into the box would make him the perfect fit.

LEFT MIDFIELD – Stan Lazaridis
The Aussie flyer was the most consistent winger I`ve witnessed at St. Andrew`s. Nothing more to say, really.

STRIKER – Christophe Dugarry
Obviously the French wizard was going to be in the team. The best player I have seen at Blues, he was a magician.

STRIKER – Mikael Forssell
The blonde Fin has edged out my favourite player, Geoff Horsfield. His finishing was top class and his pace gave him the edge over defenders. Perfect foil for Dugarry.

SUBS (2 for each position)
Joe Hart (GK) Maik Taylor (GK) Liam Daish (DEF) Steve Bruce (DEF) David Dunn (MID) Seb Larsson (MID) Steve Claridge (ST) Geoff Horsfield (ST)

MANAGER – Barry Fry – just imagine big Baz in charge of that lot?

Blues fans, feel free to disagree?
