Birmingham City left-back David Murphy could be out of the side for anything up to five months after it was revealed that he needs to undergo exploratory knee surgery.

The 28-year-old is due to have the operation on Thursday after picking up the injury during the defeat at home to Hull City on Saturday.

The news comes as something of a shock to manager Lee Clark who finds it serious enough to arrange a longer loan spell for Paul Robinson.

‘It could be anything from six weeks to five months,’ Clark told the BBC.

‘He’s damaged his cartilage. But we won’t know the situation until he has the operation.

‘Obviously we are hoping that it is not very serious because we all know he’s a very important player to us.’
