Monk Makes Frank Admission About Decision Over Birmingham’s Last Summer Signing

|

Garry Monk admits the club are struggling to find a player good enough to come in as the final summer signing.

Due to an EFL ruling in early August, we are limited to five loan/free transfer signings, with a maximum wage of £10k a week each. The manager says those limitations make it hard to find someone who wouldn’t just be a squad player:

“Only having one position left to bring someone in is difficult. Whichever position it is, you want it to be a player you think is ready to contribute a lot to the team, rather than just another number.”

“That’s extremely difficult in the market we’re in. You want something to jump off the page. But with the restrictions we have, that’s very difficult. I can’t just bring someone in for the sake of it.”

“We’re looking at a few positions. The recruitment team and myself are constantly monitoring it.”

It’s good to hear that we haven’t given up on getting someone else in through the door. You would think there would be at least one good young Premier League player keen on getting first-team experience in the Championship.

I would probably favour recruiting another striker as although both Adams and Jutkiewicz did score at the weekend, we need additional firepower in the absence of Isaac Vassell.

It has been confirmed that our no.11 has picked up a hip injury, but Monk has said that it won’t end his season. Hopefully, the setback delays his return by weeks rather than months.
