I did a similar article on Blues midfielder Reece Brown last week, Mitch Hancox is in a very similar situation. Hancox could be another Blues youngster heading for the football scrap heap as his contract will run out at the end of the season.

After breaking into the Blues side in 2013, Hancox transformed his footballing career from a 16 year old who just scraped himself an academy scholarship, to a fully fledged professional with 20 Blues appearances to his name and his first long term professional contract which would keep him at the club until the end of 2016.

Hancox is a boyhood bluenose and is loved by all fans at the club for his grit, determination and, willingness to do well for his and our club. The last year or so hasn’t been easy for Hancox. After making a further 18 appearances in the 13/14 season, helping Blues survive on that dramatic last day at Bolton, Hancox struggled to get into the successful Blues side which finished 10th last season after the form of Jonathan Grounds, who in my opinion was one of our most constant performers last season.

Hancox was restricted to regular U21 football last season and just a solitary first team appearance at Blyth Spartans in the FA Cup 3rd round. In all honesty I was disappointed with some of Hancox’s performances in the U21’s and in that hectic 3-2 win up in the north east, you can’t fault his passion but nowadays, a lot more is required.

It’s uncertain what lies ahead for the young left back as he nears his 22nd birthday, with his contract up at the end of the season, Hancox has to prove himself soon or he could be another academy graduate to slip through the net. If Hancox was to be released at the end of the season, it would perhaps be one of the most disappointing stories ever. Personally, I love Hancox and would love him to play for the club for many years to come.

Can you see a future for the young Bluenose?
