After Welsh International David Cotterill`s man of the match performance in the 3-1 victory away at Millwall on Tuesday night it has now emerged that Millwall manager Ian Holloway was actually interested in signing the 26 year old himself this summer.

Cotterill who has been recalled to the Wales squad by Chris Coleman for the upcoming European Championship qualification games at home to Bosnia-Herzegovina and Cyprus was a real thorn in Millwalls side and it made it even sweeter for Blues that Cotterill turned down a contract at the Den to sign for Lee Clark at Birmingham City.

The Welshman decided not to accept a new contract offer from Doncaster Rovers in the summer and was on the lookout for a new club. Ian Holloway told the media that he even got Cotterill down to his house and sat him in his garden for talks but nothing ever materialised from this and to the fortune of Birmingham City, a few weeks later put pen to paper on a three year deal at St. Andrews.

Ian Holloway told the media; “Ironically he was sat in my garden last summer and he has ended up at Birmingham. That was probably my fault.”

The right midfielder who has scored twice and assisted four times in his nine appearances so far for Blues has been hailed as Lee Clarks ‘Player of the season?so far` and the confidence that Cotterill Is showing on the pitch is getting him rave reviews and his recent performances have turned him into an instant hero at the club.

In the prime of his career, Birmingham is Cotterill`s ninth club of his career and it is clear to see already that in situations when Blues have their backs against the wall he is one of the few players who keeps their head and tries to stay relaxed and keep possession making him one of the best signings that Lee Clark has made in his three year tenure as club manager.

Birmingham`s number 11 has started the season in fine form but he still has much more to show the Blues faithful and he will hope to replicate his goal scoring form on Saturday when Blues travel to Charlton who are unbeaten this season.
