Earlier today we brought you the news that Birmingham City Ladies had re-signed Aiofe Mannion in light of the upcoming season which starts in March against a very strong Liverpool side. As mentioned, this shows how well the club is dealing with your prospects especially nurturing defenders in terms of giving them experience which will enable increased pitch awareness. Therefore I was delighted to see that Blues’ Ladies have extended the contract of another defender.

Meaghan Sargeant has agreed a new contract with the Club ahead of the new super league programme. As a defender, often teams look to buy in experienced players but it is good to see David Parker, the Birmingham Ladies manager, reward good progress at youth level.

Blues Ladies manager, David Parker said to the official Birmingham Site that: “Meg is a player of great ability and versatility.’ Now this is a big thing in the women’s game as injuries are fairly common and it’s often hard for a club with limited funds to have enough players to cover all positions. If we are able to get talented players that can play in a few positions then it is a great advantage to the club in the coming season.

“There are no doubts about her ability and with the increased contact time at the Club she will naturally fulfil her potential.’ He goes on to say. I think that this is undoubtedly true because we have shown to be good at bringing young players through. Last season was a transition season whereby we stuck with young players in order to build a team for the future. We didn’t expect results straight away but if this team can build together and gain a good understanding then they will be a strong force to be reckoned with in the future.

“Meg has competed at every youth level for England up to U23s…’ She may be young but she certainly has experience dealing with the pressures that the game can bring. Often we think of younger players as needing a lot of game time in order to get up to the required standard but I believe she has done a lot of work psychologically to be at the standard she is at.
