Alex McLeish watched his side pull off a last gasp win with a last minute penalty against Portsmouth at St Andrews last night and declared himself pleased with the result.

James McFadden scored from the spot in injury-time and that was enough for Blues to get their first points on the board for this season.

It was a controversial penalty award, Referee Lee Probert awarded the spot kick when David James ran into Seb Larsson who ended up on the deck.

And now Blues have their first points at home, McLeish wants his side to do what Stoke did last season and make their home games very difficult indeed for the visitors.

Speaking to Sky Sports, McLeish said: ‘We are delighted because we know how tough it is to win in the Premier League and especially coming up from the Championship and being tipped as the underdogs throughout this coming season.

‘It is only the start but it was a great victory nonetheless because we lamented the fact last time in the Premier League that we drew too many home games.’

He added: ‘I think we deserved to win it in the end – I thought we had the better chances, we took the initiative right from the off.

‘Portsmouth had a wee spell midway through the second half where I thought they had a wee bit of the ascendency without really causing us any problems.

‘The only problem that was ever caused to us was right after we scored – they went right up the park. (John) Utaka’s speed killed us a little bit and we obviously had to thank the striker or the midfielder whoever it was on the end of it for not the best of finishes.’

Asked about the contentious penalty he said needed to see the incident again: ‘I never commit myself to these things before I see it but everybody in the dressing room tells me it is a penalty so I have got to take their word for that.’
