Birmingham manager Alex McLeish is looking to the veterans in his side to provide the experience and skill needed to keep Blues in the Premier League.

The defeat at Wigan on Saturday was a massive blow for the club and they slipped into the relegation places, just one place above rock bottom.

And while McLeish has been impressed with some of the youngsters that have made the step up into the first team, he now feels that it`s down to the seasoned campaigners to keep his side in the top flight.

Speaking to the Press Association, McLeish said: ‘At this stage of the season, you are looking to get the experienced guys into the team. We have young Jordon in there and he’s had a great couple of games for us.

‘But I don’t want to have to rely on a young kid to steer us out of trouble. It’s too much pressure on him. We’ve got guys who have got the experience and knowledge and it’s important that they perform for us.

‘It’s about having those players available as well, of course. It doesn’t help when they are injured or coming back from injury and trying to gain full fitness and sharpness.”
