Birmingham boss Alex McLeish was not happy at his side conceding such a late goal to lose this game against Wigan, he was even less happy with the ref for not awarding Blues a penalty just before they lost the game.

It looked like Birmingham were going to pick up a much needed three points against the league`s bottom club when Liam Ridgewell put them in front, especially as the goal looked to be offside.

But Wigan levelled when Foster pushed a cross into the path of Cleverley and he made no mistake.

And as the game drew to a close, Alcaraz challenged Curtis Davies somewhat unfairly in the box but the referee gave nothing.

Then to rub salt into the wounds Wigan snatched all the points deep into injury time when left back Figueroa hit a shot past Foster with his weaker left foot and Blues had lost it.

‘We started the game so well but when we lost the goal we seemed to lose the plot,’ McLeish told the Press Association after the game.

‘Wigan controlled the second half, their top players inspired them, but we looked as if we could hang on and we should have been professional enough to see it through.

‘Figueroa’s right leg is only usually for standing on but he threw his weight behind it and how it went in is a mystery.

‘Ben never saw it until late because the amount of bodies in his way.

‘But how the referee doesn’t see it is a penalty before that, I am baffled.

‘Alcaraz does not look at the ball, he just takes the player out.’
