From Vital England:

Alex McLeish knows how good Joe Hart is, although he also knows how good Ben Foster is and he feels the Birmingham keeper will be challenging for the no.1 spot soon enough.

Ben Foster was going to be ‘England’s next goalkeeping hope’, although his time languishing in the reserves at Old Trafford did little to help his career, internationally or at club level…

Eventually Foster decided to move on and joined Birmingham for £6m and this move is something that Alex McLeish believes will revitalise him and see him challenging Joe Hart, who was on loan with Birmingham last season, for the no.1 spot soon enough: ‘we had a fantastic goalkeeper last season in Joe and I firmly believe him and Ben are made of similar stock.

‘Two guys, two similar characters, Joe came to the club with a strong mentality, while Ben probably has a wee bit more experience.

‘Just like Joe, Ben wanted to get first-team football, so this move was a positive one. It looks like he is going to be a great keeper for this club.’

At 27 Foster does still have his best years ahead of him, so there is every chance he can get his career back on track. He had to leave United, and having done this, if he can stay injury free, he and Hart will be two of the England keepers for the next decade or so I am sure.
