Aaron McLean scored twice as Blues progressed to the next round of the Barclays U21 Premier League Cup.

The goal that was technically his first for his new loan club came in the 78th minute.

Rolando Aarons levelled for the visitors on 88 minutes and the game looked like it was heading for extra time.

Extra time didn’t materialise though as McLean beat the off-side trap to fire home an accurate finish to give Blues U21 side a place in the next round.

The first half was not a hugely entertaining affair with few chances going to either side. Blues will no doubt be pleased with their second half especially given the strength of this young Newcastle team

Colin Doyle also played in this game, getting some match fitness, as Randolph is currently no 1 for Lee Clark.
